TONIC, designed by C. Barreau, is a Catana 431, hull number 41, built in 2002. Her first owner kept her in the Mediterranean and North Africa, and she came across the Atlantic in 2012. The current owner bought her in 2013 and has sailed her between his home in Virginia and the Lesser Antilles many times.

She is a performance catamaran, of 43.0′ LOA, with twin daggerboards and a shoal draft of 2′ 7″. With the boards down she draws 7′ 3″. Her beam is listed as 24′. Her listed dry weight is 16,755 lb. She was constructed using light-weight materials including Twaran/Kevlar cloth at high-impact areas, and foam coring.

She uses vinylester resin so there is no possibility of osmosis or gelcoat blistering. The interior finishings are also of foam core, with wood veneer, for strength and lightness. The cabin soles are cored also, with synthetic teak veneer.

TONIC is laid out in the Owner’s Version with the starboard hull for the owner. It has a large head area with walk-in shower area, washer/dryer and food storage area, a chest of drawers, a seat, and a hanging locker outside of the cabin itself. A panel swings out to give privacy to the hull occupants from the central salon. The port hull is laid out with two double cabins, although the aft cabin can be converted into two singles. There is also a head with shower. Both the port forward cabin and the shower area in the starboard hull have opening ports in the hulls so that air can circulate while at anchor, with no danger of rain entering.

There are no overhead opening ports that must be closed to prevent rain from entering the cabins. The mattresses on all berths are supported by lattice wooden frames that allow circulation of air and prevent moisture from accumulating, keeping the berths dry and cool. There is considerable storage beneath all the berths in the boat. Also under the aft berths are the water-heater storage tanks. The salon seats eight, and has a pedestal table that folds out for all to dine, but folds up for more space and access to the settee.

Drawers for cutlery and glasses are located in the pedestal. The six house batteries and additional storage space are located under the settee. There is LED lighting throughout the boat. Pressurized hot and cold water in galley sink, and in sinks and showers in both heads, plus shower on stern.

Two separate freshwater pumps. In total, there are 12 opening hatches or windows for light and ventilation throughout the boat. Windows in the accommodation have insect screens and blackout covers.


The cockpit has two helm stations, aft in each hull. Engine and transmission controls for both engines are in the starboard helm, and allow the boat to turn in its own length. The autopilot is also located at the starboard helm. Steering is by rack and pinion, with excellent feedback. Each helm also has a compass for hand steering and the wheels have leather covers. The main winch is a two-speed electric Harken 48.2 STA aft in the cockpit, on the centerline. Halyard, topping lift, outhaul, and luff lines and leech lines all run under the cockpit and come up to spinlocks at this winch. This one winch thus controls all of the lines running under the cockpit, keeping the cockpit clear. The boat has a total of 22 Spinlocks. The main sheets are controlled by 46.2 STA Harken two-speed self-tailing winches. These winches can also be used to control lifting and dropping the dinghy. With two main sheets, one sheet can control the boom and the other can be used as a vang to tighten the leech. Running, one sheet can let out the main and the other can be used as a preventer. Two 48.2 STA Harken two-speed self-tailing winches control the genoa sheets, with travellers. Two Harken 44.2 STA two-speed self-tailing winches control the daggerboards and the spinnaker sheets and guys which are run under the deck. There are also two large hatches in the sole of the cockpit, opening onto deep lockers. Normally, these lockers are used to store cleaning supplies, dinghy equipment, jerry-jugs, etc. The cockpit has settees port and starboard, with two on port adjoining the table, and cushions for the settees. There is a folding chair in one of the “garages” up forward that allows another person to sit at the table, easily allowing dining for four. Cockpit curtains are provided on both sides and aft for protection from sun and rain. Large gas locker for two 20-lb propane tanks (not included), and hoses and additional equipment. A portable stainless Steel BBQ grill can be used in the cockpit, with propane from the 20-lb tanks. Tank connection has meter and can switch tanks. Manual bilge pump handles are located inside the cover of this locker.

New trampoline installed in 2021. Screens cover the salon windows for privacy; easily removed. Not for use while sailing. Two storage lockers near mast step for stowage of anchor and rode, spare anchor and rode, dock lines, Forward of the living areas in each hull are large garages that act as storage areas for additional sails, fenders, lines, and in the starboard hull a motor mount to secure the outboard engine on long passages. There is also a 11′ folding passerelle or stern gangway with partial handrail located in the port garage. Each of these garages has a 24″ by 24″ hatch, with ventilation. Two large cleats on each bow, Midships cleat on each hull. Two large cleats and one smaller cleat aft on each hull. Swim ladder and hot and cold water faucet on port steps aft. Double safety lines, seats forward, and gated opening on each hull.
