Buying guide

Why 40 to 50 feet is the sweet spot.

Most catamarans we sell are between 40 and 50 feet. In this range you get three or four double cabins, real tankage and solar space for living aboard, and the load-carrying ability for long passages, while a couple can still handle the boat on their own.

Below 40 feet, space and payload drop quickly. Above 50, the boat, the sails and the running costs all grow: marina fees are charged by the foot, haul-outs need bigger lifts, and some marinas struggle with beams over 26 feet.

Popular models in this range include the Leopard 40, 42, 44, 45, 46 and 48, the Lagoon 400, 42, 440 and 450, the Fountaine Pajot Lipari 41, Helia 44, Astréa 42 and Saona 47, the Bali 4.0 to 4.6, the Nautitech 40 and 46, and performance boats such as the Outremer 45 and Catana 47.

Questions

40 to 50 ft catamarans: FAQ

Is a 40 ft catamaran big enough to cross an ocean?

Yes. Many 40 to 45 ft catamarans cross oceans every year. What matters more than length is the boat's condition, payload, and how well it is prepared and equipped for the passage.

Can a couple handle a 50 ft catamaran?

Yes, with the right setup. Electric winches, lines led to the helm and a good autopilot make a 50 footer manageable for two. Docking and sail handling get heavier with size, so experience matters.

How much more does a 50 ft catamaran cost to run than a 40 ft?

Running costs grow faster than length. Marina and haul-out fees are charged by the foot, sails and rigging are larger, and there is more boat to maintain. Plan on noticeably higher yearly costs for a 50 footer than a 40.

Should I choose an owner's version or a four-cabin layout?

Owner's versions give one hull to a private suite and suit couples. Four-cabin layouts, common in charter, suit families and frequent guests, and are often easier to find and lower in price.

Can you show me boats listed by other brokers?

Yes. These are the boats listed with Just Catamarans. Our brokers can show you any catamaran for sale worldwide and represent you on boats listed by other brokerages.
